Jenna Rose Sands

Picture
Jenna Rose Sands is a Cree Anishinaabe artist and writer who is turning her emotional exhaustion over the current state of Indigenous affairs into informative zines that educate and question wide spread prejudice regarding Indigenous people.  Focusing each zine on the experiences and stories of Indigenous people who have endured a multitude of atrocities committed by the Canadian government, Jenna Rose is able to pair words with dynamic mixed media works for a final result that is both powerful and visually engaging. As an ongoing series, Jenna Rose is trying to change language and ideas around Indigenous issues one zine at a time.

Artist Statement: When I think of our planet, our climate crisis and the destruction upon the ground, I think of our Mother Earth and her pain. The health of the earth is the health of our Mother. The violation of her body mimics the violation of so many Indigenous mothers. I cannot separate Motherhood from this discussion. I cannot ignore the correlation between the destruction of our ancestral lands and the destruction of thousands of Indigenous women, mothers, sisters, daughters.  Earth Day, a time to reflect on how we treat our ancient Mother and all mothers and mothering figures, we need to do better, we need to be better children.

OUR STORY
Artists Jamelie Hassan and Ron Benner and jazz musician Eric Stach founded the Embassy Cultural House (1983-1990) located in the restaurant portion of the Embassy Hotel at 732 Dundas Street in East London. Other former members of the board were: Debrann Eastabrook, Henry Eastabrook, Sharron Forrest, Wyn Geleynse, Janice Gurney, Jean Hay (1929 - 2008), Doug Mitchell, Kim Moodie, Gerard Pas, Peter Rist, Wanda Sawicki, Jean Spence and Jennie White. In 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Embassy Cultural House was re-envisioned as a virtual artist-run space and website.

This project is supported by the Ontario Arts Council and the London Arts Council through the City of London's Community Arts Investment Program.
