Earth Day 2021: Stop Extinction! Restore the Earth

Staring at the Parched Earth is a response to a dream I had after immersing myself in news feeds about the California wildfires. I was opening my awareness of the devastation these fires were causing to the land , the animals, and the humans.  This image played like a loop in my mind. Every year fires, often started by lightning or by a carelessly tossed  still lit- cigarette, devastate millions of acres of land.

International Women's Day 2021: Go; Rise and Strike

Future Constellations is a hand-built coil vessel made in my studio during the first pandemic lock-down in late March 2020. I was working through some ideas and images that had been percolating in my mind. In late 2018 I was in a serious hiking accident and spent a night on a high mountain ridge waiting for a helicopter rescue. I focused on the amazing night sky and worked through the constellation maps I had memorized to pass the time and get through the pain. This vessel is now a ‘drawing’ for a large scale tile installation I am currently working on.

Susan Day created her hand-made ceramic tiles for the top of this classic bar table for London artist Jean Spence who was one of the board members of the Embassy Cultural House, circa 1989. The table was originally one of the tables commonly used in the bar of the hotel.

OUR STORY
Artists Jamelie Hassan and Ron Benner and jazz musician Eric Stach founded the Embassy Cultural House (1983-1990) located in the restaurant portion of the Embassy Hotel at 732 Dundas Street in East London. In 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Embassy Cultural House was re-envisioned as a virtual artist-run space and website.

The Embassy Cultural House gratefully acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council and the London Arts Council through the City of London's Community Arts Investment Program.

The Embassy Cultural House (ECH) is located on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, Lūnaapéewak, and Chonnonton peoples, at the forks of Deshkan Ziibi (Antler River), an area subject to the Dish with One Spoon Covenant Wampum and other treaties, colonized as London, Ontario. The ECH strives to create meaningful relationships between the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island and our contributors. The ECH honours the stewardship of the many Indigenous peoples who have resided on these lands since time immemorial.
